此屆奧運共設35個大項，302個小項，小項比賽中男女子分別有165項和127項，混合比賽有10項。這屆奧運會新增了男子和女子的公開水域游泳、小輪車（BMX）、桌球團體賽等小項。另外，此屆奧運有傳會把武術加入表演項目，但運動員所得的獎牌並不會計算在獎牌榜中。

除此之外，這屆奧運的游泳、水上芭蕾、跳水和水球，依照過去慣例被合併為「水上項目」。此屆奧運實質上的比賽項目並沒有減少，而壘球和棒球將不會列入下屆倫敦奧運會的比賽項目中。一直到2020年前，這兩個項目都不能成為奧運項目，因此此屆奧運是2020年以前最後一屆有壘球和棒球項目的奧運。

以下是28個比賽項目：

The Olympic Games is an international multi-sport event taking place every four years and comprising summer and winter games. Originally held in ancient Greece, they were revived by a French nobleman, Pierre Frèdy, Baron de Coubertin in the late 19th century. The Games of the Olympiad, also known as the Summer Olympics, have been held every fourth year since 1896, with the exception of the years during the World Wars.

A special edition for winter sports, the Olympic Winter Games, was established in 1924. Originally these were held in the same year as the Summer Olympics, but starting with 1994 the Winter Games are in between, two years after the Games of the Olympiad.

I love watching it because it is very exciting and I can see the champion of each event. I wish I can join it and be one of them in the future!
